A-B-Seeds

A-B-Seeds was my honours year project and one of the most research-intensive projects of my academic career. The study explored how communication design, typography, and gamification can be combined to create more inclusive literacy learning materials for children with different backgrounds and learning styles. Informed by research into literacy development and Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences, the project produced a full educational system under the A-B-Seeds brand. Deliverables included interactive workbooks, learning games, kinetic typography, interactive phonics posters, and a supporting website. The project was recognised with the award for Top Student – BA Honours in Visual Communication (Communication Design) at The Open Window in 2021.

Design Approach
Typography was placed at the centre of the system to improve legibility, readability, and reading confidence for young learners. The project used Atkinson Hyperlegibility as the core typeface to reduce letterform confusion and support comprehension. Bright colours, playful illustration, and approachable branding created an engaging learning environment, while game mechanics were introduced to support multiple learning preferences beyond traditional reading methods. By combining education with interaction, the materials were designed to feel accessible, motivating, and inclusive rather than one-size-fits-all.
